All those operate in an environment with the agreement of copyright holders and presumably pay something to the copyright holders to operate.

If you have a system of copyright then there will always be the possibility for "big business" to abuse it. Though in actuality I'm never quite certain what that abuse consists of - other than companies (and bands) complaining when people set up a clear system to profit from distributing someone's work without paying them.

True copyright organisations have made some pretty silly claims over the years "home taping is killing music" for example. However the activities of the Pirate Bay etc go way beyond that as there was a clear attempt to get a commercial return

There is an narrow legal issue about whether providing access to torrent files which enable you to access copyright material is an offence. But I think the moral position is pretty clear.

One of the nastier facets of the internet is the people think that everything on their should be free. If you have a world where no-one gets paid for anything they put up on the internet - why should people actually bother?Hywelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16094171587140185827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2626792175048216892.post-78873312892929374772009-04-17T15:36:00.000+01:002009-04-17T15:36:00.000+01:00With books, you have libraries.

Following this approach I should be allowed to take a book, read it, use it as I want without paying anything because I might want to buy something by the same author.

Not an unreasonable way for an author to promote their work - but the decision to do to should be the author's not any random person.

There is a need to separate out the ideal of copyright - that someone is entitled to profit from the fruits of their labour - from the way it is operated by big businessesHywelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16094171587140185827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2626792175048216892.post-16799691538036697562009-04-03T08:30:00.000+01:002009-04-03T08:30:00.000+01:00The Royal Mail is a nationalised company, which co...The Royal Mail is a nationalised company, which concerns itself with distributing parcels and letters across the nation (up winding roads and across rivers included) in an efficient and organised way.

Er, no it doesn't. Should ISPs be allowed to block content which is clearly illegal - by which I mean regarded as such on a wide international basis and under treaties.

Two such aspects would be child pornography and access to stolen bank/credit card details.

You can I suppose draw a very narrow distinction between requiring hosts to take down such material and blocking access to it but that would be an illogical distinction.

The copyright issue is muddied by the way in which the internet has made lots of things available for free that previously cost money. However many of those still cost to produce.

If you think of copyright as the entitlement to be paid for the work that you do then it puts it in a different context.

Libraries and Radio are "free" at the point of use, however both have recognised mechanisms for payments to copyright holders.

There is an extent to which copyright "theft" has always gone on, for example taping music off the radio or copying albums for friends. What the internet has brought is (1) scale and (2) people profiting from it. Eg YouTube - look at the number of copyright titles hardcoded into their search engine.Hywelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16094171587140185827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2626792175048216892.post-57442985955352861982008-11-24T15:28:00.000+00:002008-11-24T15:28:00.000+00:00Bang on the money...and I hadnt even read this bef...Bang on the money...and I hadnt even read this before I wrote my piece...honest :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2626792175048216892.post-86146371885000465962008-11-10T18:18:00.000+00:002008-11-10T18:18:00.000+00:00People in general think that even if they work the...People in general think that even if they work their socks off in politics, they are very unlikely to make a difference.
